Commodity Buyer

Ballymena (Site based)

In partnership with a well-established manufacturer in Ballymena, I am now seeking to appoint a Commodity Buyer.

With a solid reputation for quality, my client has over 70 years of experience in the industry in which it operates.  The successful Buyer will join a manufacturer with a strong reputation for embracing green growth, both within the UK and Europe.  Having secured a significant contract in 2019, and further large contracts this past couple of years, this business has a full order book, having quadrupled capacity in recent years.  After the successful launch of a ground-breaking, sustainable product line, they are fully committed to a greener future and recently secured funding to build a new, green production plant in Northern Ireland.  If you're a Buyer who is passionate about engineering, committed to environmental sustainability, and looking for fast paced work environment, this just might be the right place for you.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Reporting to the Supply Chain Director, the Commodity Buyer will select suppliers based on the most favorable cost, while ensuring adherence to quality standards and accomplishment of departmental objectives.  Duties and responsibilities will include:

 

  • Managing the pricing of materials within your designated categories, minimising total acquisition cost.  This includes managing the procurement process for new components and sourcing and onboarding new suppliers, negotiating the best cost and terms of supply for the business
  • Actively contribute to supplier reduction and cost control targets
  • Ensuring adherence to the correct revision of engineering drawings
  • Initiating requests for price quotations (RPQs) for any newly added components within your assigned categories
  • Maintaining communication with suppliers regarding key performance indicators, in line with the purchasing strategy.  Managing supplier agreements and taking necessary action for supplier underperformance, supplier improvement etc
  • Actively participating in projects related to the introduction of new products
  • Analysing the manufacturing costs of parts, considering raw material expenses, labor costs, and machining costs, to ensure the company receives value for money from subcontracted suppliers
  • Comparing drawings of new parts with existing components to validate cost fluctuations
  • Take necessary actions to recover outstanding payments from suppliers due to non-performance and warranty claim
  • Maintaing systems with relevant pricing, lead-time, and supplier information as needed.

 

Criteria

 

In order to be considered for this position, you should be able to demonstrate four years of relevant experience in a similar purchasing role.  Your experience should include cost negotiation and drafting supplier agreements.  In addition, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Sound knowledge of MRP systems
  • Experience of interpreting and communicating Engineering drawings
  • Experience of processing quotations

 

Preference will be given to candidates who are educated to a degree level (or equivalent) in a Business, Mechanical Engineering or Supply Chain Management related discipline (eg CIPS).  In addition, candidates who have experience in negotiating with suppliers for warranty recovery will be given preference.
